Race notes:

Primary goals for the day were:  BRONZE) beat last year's time, SILVER) average under 7:00/mile pace, GOLD) run Sub-3 hours.  The Gold medal possibilities started to slip away after mile 17.  The Silver after about 21.  And the Bronze, somewhere around mile 24.5...

I gave it a good attempt and left everything out there on the course.  Better pacing would likely have yielded at least a PR time, but I feel pretty good about how I ran thru the first 21 miles.  Just ran out of energy.  From that point on i was just trying to slow the bleeding...  at least i didn't completely slam into the wall like i had done at Ogden.

Took Gu's at 3, 7, 11, 15 and 19.  (I don't like carrying that many!  Hard to stomach all those but it was probably the right number for me.)

Should have grabbed a second cup at some water stations.  (Felt very thirsty at the end.)  After depriving myself for a month, that Diet Coke in the finishing area tasted excellent.

Even with a slower time than last year, overall placing was higher.  Maybe the extra heat affected a lot of peoples finish times...

Cal, great training this year. In retrospect things just didn't go our way this year. Like you, I'm anxious to rebound next year. Keep in touch.

Your pacing strategy was good. The heat once you hit 17/18 grabbed everybody. I have noticed the same comment made in most of the race reports. You have built a great amount of marathon fitness and I think you will see big improvements coming up.

From Tom on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 15:31:32 from 137.65.56.16

Great job Cal, you left it all on the course and did your best and you can't ask for more than that. As Paul and Andy mentioned - with that fine heat wave we got to enjoy the large majority of runners all had stories similar to yours (some much worse) with PRs being very rare.

Cal I just know we're both capable of a dang sub-3 and by dang one of these days WE ARE GOING TO DO IT!

On a side note you were able to snag one of my lifetime running goals by beating Terry! Congrats on that!

Nice race Cal!! Your mile times were looking really good until the end. A little more fuild and a little less heat and your time would have been much better. The best news is there are always more marathons to attempt.

Isn't it crazy how we always want a re-do so quickly? :)

You did a great job Cal! leaving it all on the course is what it's all about. You did that!! Your training was there, it was the weather that killed us all.

Keep up your hard work and we'll get that re-do soon!!

From ryandla on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 17:17:12 from 66.29.163.1

that was one tough day for a race. great job out there! let me know when you are up for another saturday run. BTW, any relation to Matt Stauffer in Lehi?

From fly on the Wall on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 17:34:27 from 204.113.19.47

No medals but it sounds like you ran a great race in the heat. You were prepared as can be but no one can control the weather.

I hope to join you for next years attack. Hopefully the weather will be much more favorable.

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 19:51:27 from 71.219.65.246

I am absolutely positive the heat affected all of us in one way or another! Sorry you had to watch the goals slip away, but the end of the race was BRUTAL. Just plain brutal.

I hate carrying gels period, it make my skirt heavy and it wants to fall off. What a pain. And I can not stomach them in the heat apparently. They are such a great invention, but such a pain!

Until the next one.....and it better be raining or something!

Great race Cal!! Your splits really did look great especially the first 21 miles. Next year will be the Gold.

From Smooth on Wed, Oct 06, 2010 at 14:16:29 from 67.41.235.104

Cal ~ You ran a GREAT race...EXCELLENT effort...and leaving it all on the course. Those pace are AWESOME! You held strong 'till almost the finish. I'm sure if it weren't for the heat/dehydration you could've kicked it in and get your GOLD!

You were smart to carry your own energy gel. I totally bombed on aid stations management this time!

From Burt on Fri, Oct 08, 2010 at 21:24:13 from 68.225.214.248

Great job Cal.
