one of my best running companions became terminally ill this week, so i came into the race knowing i was on my own.  no pacing help available.  i'd have to do it all by feel.  new territory for me.

but it was also liberating in a way.  i decided not to put any pressure on myself.  just run the race hard and enjoy the journey and be happy with the results no matter what.

so i did.  it was a good race.  beautiful scenery.  great weather.  net result, +23 seconds slower than last year's finish time.  it could have been better.  but it could have been worse.  i can live with that.

as for my running companion, he's on his way to Texas for diagnosis.  if all works out, i'll get a cash refund of my original purchase price and i can apply it toward another Garmin 205 to replace him.  he was just over 2 years old  (from my experience that's like 80 in GPS years...).  but the extended warranty that i purchased for him 2 years ago was about to expire within 14 days, so the timing worked out well.

It took me a minute to figure out what you were talking about and I was really sad for you. Great job on the race.

I was like all sad for your friend! Cal, you're too funny. I'm glad the timing worked out before he or the warranty expires! :)

GOOD JOB on the race and not shabby for coming within seconds of last year's time. You might have PR'd if you had your companion with you?! ;)

Oh man i have had my running partner go out on me several times. It is always bitter sweet. Glad you thought it to be liberating. I think it is good to go without in some races and just see what happens. Great job on the race.

Sub 7 average for 13.1 miles is great. Easy come easy go with running companions. I hope the next one is just as good or better than the last.

You had me worried there in the begining I thought your running companion was a human being. Glad to know it is just a machine. Nice race time!!!

It is nice to see a picture of you running on your blog it brings back my Herriman running days.
