I love your goal!!!! I've found that when I'm asleep I don't eat, thus going to bed early to get up for an early morning workout really helps me ;) Is that cheating!?!

From Calvin on Thu, Feb 18, 2010 at 16:04:17 from 66.133.117.3

Not cheating at all, it sounds like a great strategy. One of my problems is that I enjoy staying up late, so then I need to extend my will power for extra hours each night.

From Kelli on Thu, Feb 18, 2010 at 18:52:09 from 71.219.89.82

You started a new blog??? I was confused for a minute!

I have been running the nine miles with the group, then doing some on my own outside or at the gym. If they will not let you back on the list, let me know and I will forward it. We MAY be running here next week, I will let you know!

How are ya?

From Smooth on Thu, Feb 18, 2010 at 19:45:17 from 174.23.239.148

Cal ~ I think most are doing between 16-18. The north end of the trail (from the parking area to the Utah Veteran's Memorial Park & back) is 10-10.5 miles round trip. The south end of the trail (from parking to the trail closure & back) is 8 miles round trip. So you can easily configure how much you want to run.

From Tom on Thu, Mar 11, 2010 at 15:51:42 from 137.65.56.16

I've been fighting some right heel pain for a while. In my case I think shoes had alot to do with it.

Nice jon on the all the miles, even if some of them are uninspired. Don't know if I've ever run any miles on the treadmill that were inspired.

From Tom on Thu, Mar 11, 2010 at 15:52:05 from 137.65.56.16

Of course I meant nice "job".

From Kelli on Thu, Mar 11, 2010 at 16:01:40 from 71.219.89.82

I guess the afternoon miles were far more inspired!

Be so super careful! I ignored my right heel ache for a bit and ended up in trouble!!! Stretch your calves like crazy (that stretches your arch at the same time) just to be safe and then go get some shoes!

From Kelli on Thu, Mar 11, 2010 at 16:19:57 from 71.219.89.82

11.69 is a good round number. Are you gonna run again tonight??? You have done 3-a-days before.

From Calvin on Thu, Mar 11, 2010 at 17:34:14 from 66.133.117.3

no more running today. maybe some inclined walking to burn some calories but that's about it.

p.s. Tom, do you still wear Landreth's? i bought a pair on clearance a couple of months back thinking they were similar to the Cumulus, but i haven't liked them at all. the arch support is different and uncomfortable for me.

From Tom on Thu, Mar 11, 2010 at 17:45:02 from 137.65.56.16

Cal I dumped the Landreth's about a year and half ago for the most part. The newer models are different like you mentioned in the arch support and it seems more rigid and uncomfortable.

I was doing really good with lighter shoes for most running, not necessarily racing flats but combo of flats and trainers that were all less than 10oz. This worked for a year until I started tinkering with my form to try and heel strike less and land more on the mid-foot instead of heel. The form improvements helped all my old injuries but I was probably a little too aggressive playing with form and replaced the old injuries with the right heel pain. So now I'm trying to find the right mix of shoes and running form, etc that works best. Haven't gotten there yet but right now I'm doing more running again with heavier shoes on longer runs. The right heal pain is getting better but now I'm dealing with a little PF in both feet :(

From Smooth on Thu, Mar 11, 2010 at 19:05:42 from 174.23.198.220

From Calvin on Fri, Mar 12, 2010 at 15:50:04 from 66.133.117.3

From Calvin on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 15:58:48 from 66.133.117.3

No I'm not doing Riverton. Are you?

I'm trying to be ready for the Hurricane 1/2 in about 4 weeks.

From Andy on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 16:01:50 from 159.212.71.25

I have a 22 miler with 12 at MP on Saturday and am trying to decide if I should run it so that I have a supported long run with competition to keep my pace honest. My concern is that I will not stick to marathon pace and run it too hard.

From Calvin on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 16:07:15 from 66.133.117.3

I could see how the temptation might be there to push it. With you running at MP the competition will likely be sparse.

Awesome time of year to run down in Southern Utah.  Perfect temperature.  Slightly chilly at the start, light breeze during the race, nice and sunny but not too hot by the end.  Harder course than last year.  Slight uphill in miles 0-5, huge climb during mile 6, slight decline in miles 7-13.1.  Raced into the top 10 runners during the first quarter mile and didn't change position much after that.  Passed one guy at about 3 miles, one other guy on the big hill, and must have passed AmberG while she was off in the bushes in the second half.

Splits: (7:03, 7:13, 7:24, 7:08, 7:20, 8:39, 6:56, 7:07, 7:12, 7:09, 6:51, 6:49, 6:57, 0:55)

Not a huge field of runners.  The overall 2nd place guy was in my age group, so I moved up to 1st place in Master's, receiving an engraved medal and a couple of decent gift certificates.  Fun to have my family and some friends there cheering at the finish line.  Nice day of hiking in Zion afterward.

How many weeks till Ogden?

From Calvin on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 18:23:14 from 66.133.117.3

It's only 10 days away. I don't think it will be a stellar race for me. I'm already looking ahead to St. George instead.

Target time was 3:12, stayed under that pace thru 19 miles  (but realistically I was feeling early signs of fatigue and accompanying negative thoughts by the halfway mark...)  At 19 miles shifted gears into 'stay under 8 minute miles' mode...  (this worked until mile 23).  shifted gears again to 'just don't walk' mode...  completely drained of energy, maybe a bit dehydrated too, last 3.2 miles were very very tough physically and mentally...  thought i heard my name called out by someone during last half mile, but not completely sure... happy to cross the line and be done.

26 10:06

Analysis:

Insufficient downhill training.  Insufficient long runs.  Ten pounds heavier than at SGM.  Mini-taper only.  Should have backed off pace more in the first half.  Inadequate number of Gels?  (4 total, at 5, 9, 13, 18 miles)

Regardless it was a good training run.  Will be better trained and better prepared for next one!

Good to get another one under your belt. That seems to be the way most of us run this course. I felt the exact same way you did. I knew at mile 10 that I was in for a long day. It is so tempting to blast down the first 8 miles.

From Britta on Mon, May 17, 2010 at 13:11:00 from 99.88.147.244

It is tough to make 26 miles when signs of fatigue show up so early. I am still in awe of your time. It is a time I only dream of. I am still jealous you are all marathoning while I am barely getting in the miles I can. Congratulations!!! How many marathons is this for you?

one of my best running companions became terminally ill this week, so i came into the race knowing i was on my own.  no pacing help available.  i'd have to do it all by feel.  new territory for me.

but it was also liberating in a way.  i decided not to put any pressure on myself.  just run the race hard and enjoy the journey and be happy with the results no matter what.

so i did.  it was a good race.  beautiful scenery.  great weather.  net result, +23 seconds slower than last year's finish time.  it could have been better.  but it could have been worse.  i can live with that.

as for my running companion, he's on his way to Texas for diagnosis.  if all works out, i'll get a cash refund of my original purchase price and i can apply it toward another Garmin 205 to replace him.  he was just over 2 years old  (from my experience that's like 80 in GPS years...).  but the extended warranty that i purchased for him 2 years ago was about to expire within 14 days, so the timing worked out well.

From Kelli on Wed, Jul 28, 2010 at 11:22:50 from 71.219.99.30

I did not leave until 7 (Wednesday really is my sleep in day!)

Let's see, we ran up 134th to 5600 West, then over and down by where they are building the Rec Center and Library, then on that new road back up to Pioneer and out to the HS and back to 12600, up to 6400 W (is that what the road is called?) then down 13400 back to home.

Does that make any sense at all??? It was probably not in the same direction you ran, but last time I saw you it was on 13400 South, so that is where I look for you!

I have not run the hills for a bit because my running friend hurt her achilles and the hills bother her. But, I will be out there Friday with my husband. JOY, oh how I have missed the hills.

From Calvin on Wed, Jul 28, 2010 at 11:25:18 from 66.133.117.3

BTW RAD, Thur. won't work for me, i'm scheduled to meet a buddy on the JRP for threshold training (might be disastrous...) How would Friday be for you?

From RAD on Wed, Jul 28, 2010 at 11:30:25 from 67.172.229.125

Friday would be great, again just trying to get 6 or 8 in a day. If I can keep that consistent with a 10-12 on Saturday for a couple weeks I'll dive into higher mileage training for SGM.

Kelli, I ran that SAME loop, but from my house down to 5600W, around to the cemetary then UP past 6400W to cut back into my neighborhood. You were probably just about 10-15 minutes behind me, because I finished at 7:30 which would've been when you were 1/2 way done (about) and right by my house! Crazy, we should've coordinated a little better. I miss running company!

From Calvin on Wed, Jul 28, 2010 at 11:32:03 from 66.133.117.3

Kelli, yeah that makes sense i can visualize your route now. (no overlap of our runs today) i've been trying to add more hills as a general rule lately. not that i love them, but they help make Veyo just a blip on the road come October.

From Kelli on Wed, Jul 28, 2010 at 11:34:33 from 71.219.99.30

I actually really miss the hills, I am getting rather sick of that darn route!!!! I have been running it for months now and it is boring (although I like being able to stop at Herriman City hall for a drink!) I like variety and I am suffering on my hills---City Creek about did me in last week.

It's fun to see the HR with the speed! I think my HR is there when I'm running a nice 10mm!!

Nice work on the speed, and the humidity is crazy lately. I feel sticky all the time. There is a reason I live in the DRY heat!

From Tom on Thu, Jul 29, 2010 at 14:26:41 from 67.199.180.90

Nice work Cal, especially with the humidity factor. Hey for this workout what kind of rests do you do in between the threshold miles? Also are you following a particular program or doing your own thing? At any rate the stuff you're doing seems to be working well for you. Marathon PR is looking good for 2010!

From Calvin on Thu, Jul 29, 2010 at 15:48:35 from 66.133.117.3

Tom, we generally stop for 2-3 minutes in between sets (sometimes it seems too long, often hard to get going again).

i don't follow any rigid training plan, my key elements are long runs and tempo runs with enough recovery days in between to stave off injuries - and of course gradually increasing the overall mileage volume in the preceding weeks before the marathon.

From Tom on Thu, Jul 29, 2010 at 15:55:19 from 67.199.180.90

Cal I think that formula is about as good as any for marathon training. I've tried other programs that add a third hard day and mix in more track work with the tempos but all they seem to get me is re-injured and burned out. Once I get my mileage base up and legs used to 50-60 mpw for a couple months then I may start mimic-ing your workouts.

From Calvin on Thu, Jul 29, 2010 at 16:03:21 from 66.133.117.3

I'm really wary of doing any speed work beyond tempo runs - not sure my body would react well to it. I've never fully gotten rid of the piriformis syndrome / sciatic nerve problems, but my current routine allows me to manage it. (knock on wood)

Okay, um, fill me in!!! The only place i have been able to find is right before you enter the cove. Any other spots cause I was just thinking today that this summer is not working out so well minus the construction!!! Lucky for me today Butterfield Park had the potties open for football. I get so frustrated that all of the parks are always locked.

Hope you are having a great weekend.

From Calvin on Mon, Aug 09, 2010 at 11:04:43 from 66.133.117.3

well, i didn't know about the one by the cove until this week, but it is now a good early option on most of my routes. there is also one on 'Woodsmere' whice is one street south of Emmeline (enter from 'Ashland Ridge'). there is also one near the far south dead end of 'Juniper Crest'. And of course there are now a couple on 4800 West, but one of them has no latch on the door and you might have to bring your own TP.

So which parks have you had success in finding open rest rooms?

From Kelli on Mon, Aug 09, 2010 at 23:13:53 from 71.219.102.155

I will have to investigate those bathrooms because I have not been able to find any lately!!!

Let's see: the skate park on 13400 S is typically open. Butterfield park is open some of the time (50/50 chance) and the park on Rosecrest Road (the one with the little splash pad) is usually open! Ther Herriman Cove Park is open most of the time, too, but I hit that later in the day than you do. Oh, and BlackFork Reservoir has 2 porta potties and it is fun to run around on the gravel.

I will miss the porta potties at Herriman High, that has been nice! But there are some now on Daybreak Lake (not sure if you ever run out that far, it is 6 miles from my house so I have been there every weekend lately). And the new Bach Homes developement has one.

I could go on and on, but, like I said, I have been running towards South Jordan lately. A huge part of the reason for that is the toilets I can find along the way. How sad is that????

I love all of the nicknames that you give your loops. At least you know what you are talking about! I saw a skunk today out in Herriman, NOT GOOD!!!!

From Calvin on Tue, Aug 17, 2010 at 15:25:54 from 66.133.117.3

I just hope i can remember which courses they are when i check my log 5 years later.

I haven't seen any skunks out there. A fox crossed my path today though.

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 17, 2010 at 15:29:48 from 71.219.102.155

The skunk scared me even more than a mountain lion would. well, maybe that is not true, but it did freak me out a bit. There have been a ton of deer lately as well, I wonder why they are venturing down so much lately.

AM - Out & back thru Rosecrest.  6.2 miles @ 9:18 pace.   Sore & tired legs.  The run wasn't as stellar as the pace indicates...

Noon - TM (0%) - Double dog slow.  But even so, i had to back off on the speed a couple of times when i'd feel a twang in right hammie.  Finally stopped the machine completely on the third indication.  Not gonna push my luck any further.   3.57 miles in 33:57 minutes

The PM run will be better. Plus I don't like that number 44 on your mileage...it's Chinese superstition! :)

From Calvin on Wed, Aug 18, 2010 at 15:44:52 from 66.133.117.3

I'm not sure which is more unlucky, leaving that 44 up there or running a second time during the day when my legs are already trashed?

AM - Fun out & back run up the canyon with RAD.  Gorgeous morning.  Great temperature. Felt pretty good.  No mountain lion sightings today.  8.06 miles @ 8:52 /mile avg.

As a side note - this run puts me over the 200 mark for the month, and over the 2000 mark for the year.

Noon - TM (0%) - 6.0 miles progressive - 6.5 to 8.4 mph  (8:17 avg)  Not sure why but sometimes when i'm struggling on the TM, it feels better to speed up than to slow down.  Maybe part of it is just getting it over with sooner.

Nice workout.

So do you think there is a PR left in you for this upcoming SGM? You've definately put in the miles but you aren't getting any young. What time would it take to PR?

From Calvin on Tue, Sep 14, 2010 at 16:20:22 from 66.133.117.3

Yeah, i think i'm still capable of another PR, but it's not a given. My training and races are comparable to last year, overall mileage is a bit higher, but i'm still a couple of lbs above where i was then.

the nice thing is that i have all the splits from last year, so i can go out and have a competitive race with my former self. (it will take a 3:06 or better to do it.) feeling pretty good about my chances...

From Kim on Tue, Sep 14, 2010 at 18:21:54 from 67.199.180.90

From TBean on Wed, Sep 15, 2010 at 10:04:41 from 63.241.173.64

Just hang around the finish area for 15-30 minutes so I can talk to you and see if you were able to do it. All you need is a few of the stars to align and you'll do it.

From Tom on Wed, Sep 15, 2010 at 10:23:24 from 67.199.180.90

Cal I think the chances are pretty good for you and the PR this year. Like Terry said a lot of it will depend on what the stars are doing that day and what the race magic factor is but you certainly have earned it with the stellar training the last while.

This should be a big story down at St. George. It should make the front page! **CAL 2009 VS CAL 2010** Legas will be taking beats. Maybe ESPN will cover it. Well maybe not, but I'm interested.

No Herriman Hill running this morning, darn.

From Calvin on Mon, Sep 20, 2010 at 10:50:41 from 66.133.117.3

Our house is about 1 block north of the mandatory evacuation area. We were up late keeping an eye on the fires progress, and had some bags packed ready to head out if necessary. We saw several huge blazes and some buildings burning within a mile or so of us. But with the shifting winds and the work of fire crews, we weren't in any direct danger.

From Kelli on Mon, Sep 20, 2010 at 10:53:58 from 71.219.65.246

Good to know. i was facebooking with Rachel until 1:30 in the morning and she said your area was still safe. I am still in shock when i see where the homes burned---not rural or up in the mountains at all. That could have gotten really bad really fast!

Take care today! Are you leaving or just staying home today?

From Calvin on Mon, Sep 20, 2010 at 11:07:18 from 66.133.117.3

Tell that foot thing to SCRAM! Usually a classic first sign of PF, but in your case since it's taper time my money is on it being of the phantom pain variety. Either way it may not be a bad idea to really baby that foot the next while.

Race notes:

Primary goals for the day were:  BRONZE) beat last year's time, SILVER) average under 7:00/mile pace, GOLD) run Sub-3 hours.  The Gold medal possibilities started to slip away after mile 17.  The Silver after about 21.  And the Bronze, somewhere around mile 24.5...

I gave it a good attempt and left everything out there on the course.  Better pacing would likely have yielded at least a PR time, but I feel pretty good about how I ran thru the first 21 miles.  Just ran out of energy.  From that point on i was just trying to slow the bleeding...  at least i didn't completely slam into the wall like i had done at Ogden.

Took Gu's at 3, 7, 11, 15 and 19.  (I don't like carrying that many!  Hard to stomach all those but it was probably the right number for me.)

Should have grabbed a second cup at some water stations.  (Felt very thirsty at the end.)  After depriving myself for a month, that Diet Coke in the finishing area tasted excellent.

Even with a slower time than last year, overall placing was higher.  Maybe the extra heat affected a lot of peoples finish times...

Your pacing strategy was good. The heat once you hit 17/18 grabbed everybody. I have noticed the same comment made in most of the race reports. You have built a great amount of marathon fitness and I think you will see big improvements coming up.

From Tom on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 15:31:32 from 137.65.56.16

Great job Cal, you left it all on the course and did your best and you can't ask for more than that. As Paul and Andy mentioned - with that fine heat wave we got to enjoy the large majority of runners all had stories similar to yours (some much worse) with PRs being very rare.

Cal I just know we're both capable of a dang sub-3 and by dang one of these days WE ARE GOING TO DO IT!

I hope to join you for next years attack. Hopefully the weather will be much more favorable.

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 19:51:27 from 71.219.65.246

I am absolutely positive the heat affected all of us in one way or another! Sorry you had to watch the goals slip away, but the end of the race was BRUTAL. Just plain brutal.

I hate carrying gels period, it make my skirt heavy and it wants to fall off. What a pain. And I can not stomach them in the heat apparently. They are such a great invention, but such a pain!

Until the next one.....and it better be raining or something!

Cal ~ You ran a GREAT race...EXCELLENT effort...and leaving it all on the course. Those pace are AWESOME! You held strong 'till almost the finish. I'm sure if it weren't for the heat/dehydration you could've kicked it in and get your GOLD!

You were smart to carry your own energy gel. I totally bombed on aid stations management this time!

PM - Work sponsored 5K.  My co-worker sprinted into the lead and a gapped me by a few seconds.  I figured he wouldn't be able to maintain the pace so I stayed patient and just kept him within reach.  He started to lose momentum and I passed him up just after the first mile.  I snuck a peek and the 3rd place guy was still about a hundred yards back, so i just put it into cruise control.  I looked back again after the second mile during a short out & back section of the course, and the 3rd place guy had moved into 2nd, but by my mental timing he was a good 40 seconds behind by now, so i eased back on the pace some more (plus this is the big uphill section).   Ended up about 50 seconds ahead by the finish.  Not a stellar time by any means, but it was enough to bring home the $75 prize.  Mission accomplished.  (6:23, 6:45, 7:11, 0:50)  Official time 21:08.

Short 0.8 cooldown running back to meet up and finish the race with my son.

AM - Since i had some hours to kill in Provo, i started my run going backwards on the Halloween Half course.  (It turns out that its a bit hazardous to run against the grain when a race of that magnitude is taking place.  Tons of runners and a lot of them don't see you coming until its almost too late.)  I did my best not to be a menace, jumping off into the weeds and rocks at times.   When i hit the Vivian park area, i diverted for a half mile up the other canyon to increase my mileage then turned came back and joined up with the racers going in the right direction.  (And no i wasn't a bandit, i didn't take any of the drinks at the water stops... )  Was able to pick up the pace on the way back, but it was tough working thru everyone on the crowded trail.

STINK! I wish I would've kept a better look out for you. The girl I was running with was getting nervous about the people running up the trail and finally asked me "are those people done and running back up here to find their friends?!?" That made her feel better, so it would've been nice to run into you and have you tell her that as well - she wasn't THAT slow! :)

Oh how I love a 'natural' pace with no watch! Sometimes I wish I knew what pace that was though, but when I try and find it on my garmin it never feels quite right :)

usually those letters begin to indicate some sort of pain creeping in...I hope it's not!

Do we need to get a bunch of people to get after you about not getting these miles in to help motivate you? :)
